Notes
Brooks/Rust: "Recording pioneer Joe Belmont told historian Jim Walsh in 1947 that the voices on this famous recording were himself, Byron G. Harlan, Frank C. Stanley and 'the three original Florodora Girls' from the hit Broadway show. The participants are not identified on the label or in catalogs, so the claim cannot be independently verified. If three actresses did take part in the recording they were probably only on earlier takes; the original cast ended its long New York run on Jan. 25, 1902, around the time this disc was initially recorded. Aural identification is inconclusive, although 10" -6 does sound as if it was made at a later date, with different female vocalists than the earlier takes - probably regular studio artists. For the record, six original 'Florodora Girls' (in the show the song was sung as a double sextette) were Margaret Walker, Marjorie Relyea, Daisy Greene, Vaughn Texsmith, Marie L. Wilson and Agnes Wayburn. Whoever was on the record, it was an enormous hit. The November 1904 Columbia Record commented that 'demand for this particular record was so great, at one time, that it was seriously suggested that work on everything else should be suspended and the full record making plant of the factory be concentrated on "Tell Me Pretty Maiden" until the accumulation of orders for it could be filled.'"
