Sheet music from 1914 credits John Valentine Eppel for the original melody, Frederic Knight Logan for the piano arrangement, and J. R. Shannon for lyrics. U.S. Copyright Office records state that the original melody was "procured by" Eppel. The true composer of the melody has not been identified with certainty, and a variety of stories exist about the tune’s origins.
